McDonalds sparked controversy on Thursday morning by trying to engage President Trump in a twitter war before quickly retracting their statement, and claiming their account had been ‘compromised.’
The tweet stated: “@realDonaldTrump You are actually a disgusting excuse of a President and we would love to have @BarackObama back, also you have tiny hands,”. This was posted in the morning at 9:16 by McDonalds official Twitter Account.
In a couple of minutes, this tweet had been retweeted over a 1000 times, before which McDonalds took it down and followed up at 10:30 a.m. saying that they were ‘investigating the incident.’
“Twitter notified us that our account was compromised,” the restaurant posted. “We deleted the tweet, secured our account and are now investigating this.”
In a statement later, McDonalds representative Terri Hickey said that after being informed by twitter that the Twitter account was hacked, they took rapid measures to secure the account and get rid of the offensive tweet. He also apologized for the posting of the tweet through their corporate account.
Donald Trump, being renowned for his Twitter activity, continues to remain mum about the incident, despite it occurring on his favorite social platform.
McDonald’s has always been a favorite of the President, which is no secret. In a CNN town hall, he explained his attraction to fast food joints is a result of his passion for cleanliness, and his preference to visit places that set a certain standard when it comes to the food served.
President Trump has also appeared in a McDonald’s commercial, promoting the now-discontinued Big N’ Tasty burger with Grimace, the company’s iconic giant purple creature from McDonaldland at the Trump Tower.
